SUICIDES

In addition levels of stress-related illness have been higher than in any other police force:

almost 70 serving officers have committed suicide, many of them with RUC issued weapons

(Northern Ireland Police Federation).

Between 1970 and 1996, 39 regular RUC officers and 16 full-time Reserves committed suicide,

in 47 cases a personal protection firearm was used.  (Hansard 18 Dec 1996)

The names of all RUC officers who died in service are commemorated in the

RUC GC MEMORIAL GARDEN

The Royal Ulster Constabulary George Cross Foundation was established under the Police (NI) Act 2000 for marking the sacrifices and honouring the achievements of the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

In September 2003 HRH The Prince of Wales opened their Memorial Garden at the Northern Ireland Police HQ in Belfast. The landscaped gardens lead, via a ‘History Trail’, to a set of Memorial Tablets of black granite on which are carved the names of all RUC officers who died in service.
