Local Police Memorials

Between 1984 and 2012 the Police Memorial Trust has erected 39 local memorials

to 44 police officers killed in the execution of their hazardous duty, normally at or near where they fell.

Below are details of all these memorials, showing the officer's year of death, rank, name, age, force,

brief circumstances of death, any national honour or award and location of the memorial.

Shot dead without warning as they questioned three suspects in a van.

Fatally shot off duty trying to arrest an armed terrorist chased by police.

Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.

Shot dead as he confronted a man who had just shot a colleague.
Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Metropolitan Police

Fatally stabbed when attacked whilst on surveillance duty.

Metropolitan Police

Beaten and stabbed to death by a mob during large scale rioting.
Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

Staffordshire Police

Fatally injured when pushed from a building while arresting a burglar.

Metropolitan Police

Killed by a drunk driver who drove off with him clinging to the car.

Shot dead when he intervened in an armed robbery while off duty.

Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

Run down and fatally injured trying to stop a stolen car while off duty.

Killed when repeatedly stabbed in a violent struggle to arrest a suspect.

Fatally stabbed when, although off duty, he attempted to arrest a thief.

Shot dead by terrorist gunmen while checking a suspect car.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Northumbria Police

Beaten and stabbed to death while dealing with a disturbance at night.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.

Shot dead while investigating the sound of gunfire in the street.

Fatally injured by a speeding van which failed to stop at a road check.

Killed when struck by a stolen vehicle he was attempting to stop.

Killed when a van being pursued by police deliberately rammed their car.

Fatally injured when dragged by a stolen car while attempting an arrest.

2003 DC Stephen Oake 40

Greater Manchester Police

Fatally stabbed restraining a suspect terrorist attacking other officers.

Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

2003 PC Ian Broadhurst 34

West Yorkshire Police

Shot dead trying to arrest a suspect who suddenly produced a gun.

2004 DC Michael Swindells 44

West Midlands Police

Stabbed to death attempting to arrest a violent suspect armed with a knife.

Posthumously awarded the

Queen's Gallantry Medal.

2005 PC Sharon Beshenivsky 38

West Yorkshire Police

Shot dead when confronted by 3 men on arrival at the scene of an armed robbery.

Memorial - Unveiled 2009 at 120, Morley Street, Bradford.

2006 PC Joseph Carroll 46

Northumbria Police

Killed while transporting a prisoner who caused his patrol car to crash.

Memorial - Unveiled 2008 at the Styford Roundabout, A69 near Corbridge.

2007 PC Jonathan Charles Henry 36

Bedfordshire Police

Fatally stabbed attempting to arrest a knifeman attacking people in the street.

Memorial - Unveiled 2008 opposite the Arndale Centre, George Street, Luton.

2009 PC Gary Toms 37

Metropolitan Police

Died of accidental injuries sustained whilst attempting to arrest escaping suspects.

Memorial - Unveiled 2010 at Ashlin Road, London, E15

2009 PC Bill Barker 44

Cumbria Police

Killed searching for casualties when a bridge collapsed in severe flooding.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Bravery.
