 Kenneth Andrew Brodie

Police Constable

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary

Died 8 January 1997, aged 34

Killed in a road traffic accident when his police patrol car was involved in a three-car collision, in which a married couple were also killed, while on mobile patrol on the A76 near Mennock, Dumfries-shire.


Steven Willis

Constable

Royal Ulster Constabulary

Died 10 January 1997, aged 31

Killed in a road traffic accident while travelling to early shift duty in Co. Armagh.


Michael Gamble

Constable

Royal Ulster Constabulary

Died 27 February 1997, aged 24

Fatally injured in a road traffic accident late on the night of 26 February, when his police patrol car collided with tree on the Kesh-Enniskillen Road at Buninubber, Killadeas, Co. Fermanagh, and died from his injuries the next day.


Giles Fraser Drinkall

Leicestershire Constabulary

Died 2 April 1997, aged 35

Killed in a road traffic accident, while returning to police headquarters from Royal Escort duties at Hinckley, in the evening, when his police motorcycle lost control and crashed on the M69 motorway.


Darren Robert Bradshaw

Constable

Royal Ulster Constabulary

Died 9 May 1997, aged 24

While the officer was off duty with friends in a bar in Dunbar Street, Belfast, late at night, terrorist gunmen entered the premises and one of them shot the constable in the back; as the officer staggered two more shots were fired and he died at the scene from his injuries.

His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.


John Richard Fitton

Died 20 May 1997, aged 53

Died from injuries received in a road traffic collision on 14 May, when he was struck by a motor vehicle in Chesterfield, while he was cycling home from duty.


Keith Maddison

Police Constable

Durham Constabulary

Died 21 May 1997, aged 46

Following a five mile pursuit of a stolen horse box across Co. Durham at night, two men abandoned the vehicle at Howden-le-Wear; the traffic patrol officer then began chasing the two suspects on foot but soon afterwards he collapsed and died.


Robert Gregory Taylor

Died 1 June 1997, aged 41

While off duty with friends in a public house in Ballymoney, Co. Antrim, he was recognised as a police officer by local loyalists and jostled and abused. When he left the bar in the early hours he was attacked by a waiting mob and brutally beaten and kicked to death.

His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.

Died 16 June 1997, aged 34

David Andrew Johnston

Reserve Constable (Full Time)

Died 16 June 1997, aged 30

While on foot patrol together in Church Walk, Lurgan, two terrorist gunmen approached the officers from behind and opened fire at point blank range; both officers were shot in the head and killed.

Their names are recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.


Alan Duffy

Died 20 June 1997, aged 44

Killed while reporting for early turn duty at Saltburn when his bicycle was struck head on by a drunk driver whose car had crossed the carriageway.


Paul Ralph Cotton

Avon and Somerset Constabulary

Died 28 July 1997, aged 38

Died of injuries received in a road accident on 14 July when cycling to duty at Shepton Mallet.


Mark Ian Flood

Metropolitan Police

Died 29 July 1997, aged 32

Killed in a road accident, while reporting for early duty at Addington Police Station, when his motorcycle collided head-on with a lorry at Hurst Green.


Terence John Finch

Ministry of Defence Police

Died 20 August 1997, aged 49

Whilst escorting a Ministry of Defence convoy, with the Special Escort Group, he sustained fatal injuries when his motorcycle was in collision with a lorry near Burghfield, Berkshire.


Stephen Philip Armstrong

Police Sergeant

Durham Constabulary

Died 23 August 1997, aged 35

Fatally injured in a road accident on the A194m Washington by-pass, while returning home after finishing duty in the early hours, when his vehicle collided with a stray horse.


Ian William Jessett

Police Constable

Metropolitan Police

Died 25 August 1997, aged 39

Killed when his motorcycle was in collision with a lorry, while on route to Clapham police station to report for aiding duty at the Notting Hill Carnival.


Nina Alexandra MacKay

Police Constable

Metropolitan Police

Died 24 October 1997, aged 25

As a member of a Territorial Support Group she forced entry to a dwelling flat at Stratford, in order to arrest a violent and deranged wanted man, whereupon she was stabbed in the chest and fatally wounded.

Posthumously awarded the Commissioner's High Commendation for Bravery and her name inscribed on the Roll of Honour at New Scotland Yard.

Her name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London and a memorial stone was erected at the scene by the Police Memorial Trust.


John Shevlin

Police Constable

Merseyside Police

Died 10 November 1997, aged 36

Seriously injured on 21 October 1995, while responding on an emergency call to a road accident in Huyton, when his police vehicle went out of control and hit a garden wall. As a result of his injuries he  remained in a coma until his death two years later.
