Died 13 January 2002, aged 36

Died from head and internal injuries sustained the previous evening, while protecting the scene of a broken down vehicle on the A12 dual carriageway at Colchester. In dark and misty weather, he was on foot wearing reflective clothing, laying out cones and lighting when he was struck by a passing car.

Gary had completed eleven years service having been appointed to the Essex Police in 1990. He was a traffic officer based with the Northern Road Policing Unit at Stanway.

He was survived by his wife and two daughters aged 7 and 2 years.

His name is recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London.

Died 21 January 2002, aged 33

Died as a result of injuries sustained on the afternoon of 15 January, while on routine patrol, when his police car was in collision with a lorry on the A1104 between Alford and Mablethorpe.

John had seven years service in the Lincolnshire Police, having transferred from Essex and was stationed at Alford.

He was survived by his wife and two sons aged 2 years and 14 months.

Died from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident whilst travelling to duty.

Bob had twelve years service in the Nottinghamshire Police.

Nigel Skinner

While travelling home from duty at Woking Police Station on the evening of 28th February, his motorcycle was in collision with a car at Chiddingfold and he sustained injuries from which he died early next morning.

Nigel had first joined the Force as a Cadet in 1971 and was in his 30th year of police service; he was based at Woking Police Station on the Vulnerable Persons' Unit.

He was survived by his wife, their son and his son and daughter from his first marriage.

Died 21 April 2002, aged 29

Killed in a motorcycle accident on his way to work at Kentish Town Police Station, when he was in collision with a car.

Matthew joined the force in 1991, he worked at Chingford before transferring to Camden Borough in 1997

He was survived by his wife.

Nicholas John Hill

Died 10 May 2002, aged 27

Died of injuries sustained on 8 May when his motorcycle was in collision with a car at Barnes while reporting for day duty at Hammersmith police station.

Nicholas had served at Mitcham from 1993 prior to joining Hammersmith and Fulham Borough in September 2001.

He was survived by his wife and 9 week old son.

Hugh Davidson 2002

Killed in an early morning road accident while travelling to duty at police headquarters , when a car, the driver of which also died, swerved across the carriageway and struck his vehicle head on near Fenwick, Ayrshire.

Hugh worked in the Complaints and Discipline branch at Strathclyde Police Headquarters in Glasgow having previously been based at Ayr. He had joined Ayrshire Constabulary as a Cadet in 1973 and was appointed Constable in R Division in 1976.

He was survived by his wife and three young daughters.

Collapsed and died on duty while training in the police station gym in Belfast.

Died from injuries sustained when his motorcycle was in collision with a car while travelling to duty at Pontypridd from his home Bridgend.

The officer, who had just finished night surveillance duties, was found dead near his crashed police motorcycle on the A406 Barking Flyover; apparently having lost control of his machine and fallen into the road, sustaining fatal head injuries.

Paul had 15 years service on Division and the Territorial Support Group in East London.

He was survived by his wife and two daughters aged 7 and 4 years.

The officers were together in a lay-by on the A42 near Worthington, preparing to assist in stopping a speeding vehicle that had been pursued by police from Solihull in the West Midlands, in the early hours; the suspect, who was drunk, deliberately rammed their police vehicle, PC Munn was killed instantly and PC Moore died later in hospital.

The van driver was convicted of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, this was overturned on appeal and at a retrial he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment.

Bryan had served for 21 years, appointed in 1981 after cadet service, and was stationed at Shepshed police station, local policing unit, as a general duty officer. He had received an award for bravery at a fire in 1988 and in 1977 he was commended by his Chief Constable for the arrest of two armed men.

Bryan was survived by his wife, two sons aged 13 and 11 years and a daughter aged 10.

Andy had 6 years service having been appointed in 1996 and was stationed at Shepshed police station local policing unit as a general duty officer. He received his Chief Constable's commendation in 2000 for bravery at a house fire.

Andy was survived by his wife, a daughter aged 9 and a son aged 3 years.

Their names are recorded on the Roll of Honour at the National Police Memorial in London and a memorial stone was erected by the Police Memorial Trust near the scene at the Donnington Park motorway services.


James Liddell Clarke

Died 16 August 2002, aged 34

While on routine traffic patrol on the A82 at Loch Lomond during the late evening, the unmarked police car in which he was the observer was struck head-on by a car which veered across their path, the police car was then hit by two other vehicles; he was killed and his driver,  PC Neil Jeffrys sustained severe head injuries from which he died in 2011.

Jim had 14 years police service, he had joined the Metropolitan Police in 1988 and transferred to Strathclyde in 1995; he was based in the traffic department at the Road Policing Complex in Govan.

He was survived by his wife and 11-year-old daughter.

Collapsed and died from a heart attack whilst on duty in the early morning in the custody suite at Chingford Police Station.

John had nearly 29 years service in the force and was attached to Waltham Forest Borough.He was survived by his wife, a serving officer, and two adult sons.

Nigel Andrew Syder

Died 27 August 2002, aged 39

Nigel Syder

Died as a result of multiple injuries sustained in a road traffic accident on 5th August, whilst on surveillance duties in South East London, when his unmarked police motorcycle was in collision with a motor vehicle, which failed to stop.

Nigel had joined the Metropolitan Police in 1981 after Cadet service and served at Kennington, South Norwood, 4 Area Crime OCU and SO11.

He was survived by his wife and 5 year old twin son and daughter.

Alan Lee

Killed in a road traffic accident whilst reporting for duty at Thorpe Wood police station, when his motor scooter was in collision with a bus outside the station.

Allan had joined the force in November 1998 after three years with Hampshire Constabulary where he had been commended for his work as a community officer. He was based at Thorpe Wood where he was a member of the Family Unit Team.

He was survived by his wife and two daughters aged 5 and 2 years.

Robert Ling

While in South Africa with other officers extraditing two murder suspects, en route to Johannesburg Airport in a two vehicle convoy, they were travelling at high speed in the emergency lane in heavy rain when his driver lost control of their unmarked police car, which overturned and he sustained fatal injuries.

On 7 October 2005 the South African Police driver was convicted of culpable homicide and sentenced to 3 years imprisonment suspended for 5 years and banned from driving.

Robert had served six years at Sutton Coldfield Police Station, where he worked on CID.

He was survived by his parents and was their only child.

Memorial stones were placed by colleagues at his police station and in the Police Memorial Garden at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

Glynn Suckley

Died 19 October 2002, aged 50

Glyn Suckley

Collapsed and died from heart failure after pursuing on foot a suspect who had run off from a car he had stopped while on mobile patrol at night at Stamford.

Glyn had nearly 20 years service with the MOD Police whose officers regularly supported local Lincolnshire Police officers on night duty at weekends.

He was survived by his wife and step-daughter, his parents, brother and sister.

Died 12 November 2002, aged 39

Died of multiple injuries sustained while reporting for night shift duty, when his motorcycle was in collision with a car, coming in the opposite direction, at Kent Gateway, Addington.

He had just completed one years service, having previously worked as a security guard, and was attached to Croydon Borough police.

Christian Noel A. Parker

Christian Parker

While responding to an emergency call, of suspects on premises at a builders yard in Tottenham, his marked police vehicle left the road and collided with a tree, seriously injuring his female police observer and causing him fatal injuries.

Christian had been appointed to the force in March 1996 and was serving at Haringey borough, having recently transferred from Newham.

He was survived by his fiancee with whom he resided together with her two children from a previous marriage.

Died 3 December 2002, aged 30

Darren Pike

Sustained severe injuries in a road accident on 27 November, while undergoing a police motorcycle training course, when his machine was in collision with a car near Little Gransden, Cambridgeshire, as a result of which he died a week later.

Darren had completed 11 years service since joining Essex Police where he had also been a Police Cadet and a Firearms Officer on the Force Support Unit and received two Commendations. He transferred to the City force early in 2002, based at Bishops Gate Police Station and had recently been appointed to the Traffic Department.

Darren was survived by his parents and brother, and his daughter.
