While on mobile patrol at Pilling on 15 March, he collapsed at the wheel of his police vehicle, which then left the road, collided with a stone wall and overturned; the officer having suffered a cerebral haemorrhage from which he died in hospital two days later.

The former officer, who had retired as a full-time RUC Reserve on health grounds the previous year, was shot dead by terrorist gunmen whilst out shopping with his wife in Armagh.

National Police Memorial in London.
