The two officers responded to a routine incident of a reported burglary during the late morning at Mottram; on arrival they were attacked, without warning, by a man armed with a firearm and a grenade, which he discharged and both officers were shot and fatally wounded, with Constable Bone dying at the scene and Constable Hughes a short time later in hospital.
