PC William Vaughan

Died 23 December 1856, aged 25

Fatally stabbed while arresting a man for causing a disturbance in the street.


PC Michael Gandly

Died 24 September 1870, aged 35

While on patrol in the early hours he collapsed and died of a ruptured blood vessel.


PC James Davis

Died 29 September 1877, aged 36

Found drowned in Seacombe dock at night near an unprotected quay on his beat.


PC James Goodwin

Died 11 November 1879, aged 28

Died as a result of internal injuries received arresting two men in August 1876.


PC James Daley

Died 3 June 1923, aged 25

Found drowned in Morpeth dock 12 days after he went missing on patrol in a storm.


PC Albert Pratt

Died 16 November 1937, aged 43

Overcome by fumes warning residents in a burning building and died five days later.

Died 14 May 1938, aged 47

Fatally injured when knocked down by a speeding pedal cyclist.

Killed by enemy action whilst on duty during an enemy air raid.

Killed by enemy action during an air raid at the Co-op Shelter duty status unknown.

Died 9 May 1941, aged 34

Fatally injured by enemy action on 3 May whilst on duty during an enemy air raid.


PC Richard H. Smerdon

Died 22 May 1965, aged 52

Collapsed and died while on duty in a patrol car at night.

Died 31 May 1941, aged 55

Fatally injured cycling home from duty the previous day in a collision with a coach.


Insp Richard Hodson Troop

Died 27 October 1944, aged 53

Became ill at the police office, taken home and died soon after arrival of the doctor.

Died 13 November 1893, aged 26

Bludgeoned and beaten trying to arrest three thieves at night and died next morning.

Died 31 January 1914, aged 30

Collapsed and died after running to a fight and arresting one of the men.


PC Adam Mather

Died 19 June 1915, aged 50

Collapsed and died after assisting in the violent arrest of two men at night.

Died 24 February 1937, aged 31

Fatally injured in a fall off a fire engine attending a lorry fire in the early hours.


PC Ieuan Griffith Jeffreys

Died 4 May 1941, aged 31

Killed investigating an unexploded bomb which detonated on aid duty in Liverpool.


Sgt Kenneth Henry Broughton

Died 16 January 1966, aged 43

Collapsed and died of heart failure during his last tour of night duty.

Drowned while endeavouring to rescue a drowning woman from a rough sea.

Posthumously awarded the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society

his name inscribed on the Carnegie Hero Roll.

Fatally shot trying to calm an insane man with a shotgun in his house at Oxton.

Died 19 August 1825

An active Dock Policeman who drowned after he fell into the Prince's Dock.

Suffocated in the foul water of a privy attempting to arrest a suspect hidden there.

Drowned when the police boat in which he was on patrol capsized in rough weather.

Killed when crushed by a collapsing wall while fighting a large warehouse fire.

Killed by the collapse of a wall while fighting a fire at a chemical works.

Killed by falling masonry whilst fighting fires during an enemy air raid.

Killed while acting as a volunteer ambulance driver when a hospital was bombed.

Died 4 May 1941, aged 43

Killed during an enemy air raid with his family at their Stanley Park Lodge home.

Died 7 June 1838, aged 35

Fatally injured when attacked while dispersing a crowd at a prize-fight.


PC David Bailey

Died 15 April 1839, aged 28

Fatally stabbed in the neck attempting to arrest a man armed with a knife.

Died 7 February 1844, aged 36

Died 10 days after breaking his leg in a fall on duty on a steamship in the docks.


PC Richard Fairclough

Died 16 December 1844, aged 36

Hit on the head with a poker dealing with a domestic disturbance and died next day.

Died 27 January 1849, aged 36

Found dead early morning in a cellar area on his beat having suffered a stroke.

Died 10 October 1850, aged 22

While guarding a shipwreck on a flatboat at night he fell in the water and drowned.

Died 10 October 1850, aged 22

Collapsed and died suddenly while on duty at the Central Dock Station.

Died 1 November 1853, aged 32

Stabbed in the leg arresting a man during election disturbances and died soon after.

17 February 1858, Aged 27

Accidentally killed in a fall into an unprotected part of a dry dock on a foggy night.

Died 25 January 1867, aged 34

Died of head injuries received 29 October 1866 when assaulted attempting an arrest.


PC Samuel Kingsbury

Died 23 June 1869, aged 33

Died as a result of injuries received 6 June when tripped during a disturbance.


PC George Dawson

Died 5 March 1870, aged 31

Collapsed and died of a stroke awaiting his case called at Dale Street Police Court.


PC Mathias McGuire

Died 19 February 1873, aged 22

Found injured on his beat and died of concussion of the brain probably from a fall.

Died 5 March 1883, aged 51

Killed in a fall off the top deck of a moving tramcar checking for overcrowding.


PC John Geddes

Died 4 December 1886, aged 24

Missing believed drowned on night dock beat, body found in river 19 April 1887.


PC James Graham

Died 13 August 1887, aged 23

Found dead at station cause unknown 3 days after a violent attack during an arrest.


PC Richard Green

Died 20 October 1890, aged 30

Killed when struck on his head by a heavy gate it was his duty to close at the docks.


PC John Young

Died 23 May 1899, aged 28

Fatally injured 18 May driving the police ambulance when the horse bolted.


PC Charles Parfitt

Died 12 March 1904, aged 34

Collapsed and died of heart failure during day and night shift change over.


PC Lewis Hughes Jones

Died 6 June 1904, aged 48

Fatally injured when endeavouring to stop a runaway horse and float.


PC Thomas McEwan

Died 18 April 1907, aged 46

Accidentally crushed between two railway wagons while directing traffic.


PC Brownlow Locke

Died 24 November 1907, aged 26

Killed assisting a porter to close a heavy iron gate when it fell on him.


PC Thomas Power

Died 16 February 1911, aged 48

Died of injuries sustained in 1904 in a road accident saving two children.


PC Henry Phillips

Died 15 August 1911, aged 32

Died as a result of injurysustained on January 19th in a fall at a warehouse fire.


PC Samuel Ballance

Died 3 September 1911, aged 23

During after operations on injuries received when assaulted during earlier rioting.


PC William Porter Moore

Died 22 August 1912, aged 43

Found drowned off duty possibly trying to rescue his son also drowned in the river.


Sgt George Anderson 

Died 26 May 1913, aged 49

Died as a result of severe injuries received when he was attacked by a mob in 1911.


PC Samuel Jonah Smart

Died 23 November 1913, aged 50

Driving a patrol wagon when a horse bolted and he was thrown and fatally injured.


PC John James Christian

21 July 1915, aged 56

Collapsed and died while on duty at the Court of Passage, St. George's Hall.


Sgt William Sant

Died 5 August 1916, aged 49

Killed on mounted patrol when his horse was startled and fell on him.

Died 22 January 1921, aged 24

Fatally injured 11 January in a fall from high steps whilst checking property.


PC Albert Millington

Died 16 January 1932, aged 38

Killed when hit from behind by a speeding car while on bicycle patrol.


PC Richard Haig Little

Died 23 September 1933, aged 36

Took his own life as a resultof head injuries received in an assault on 16 July.

Died 28 March 1936, aged 38

Knocked down by a motor lorry and fatally injured cycling to duty on 26 March.

Died 13 September 1936, aged 32

Fatally injured while cycling to duty in an accidental collision with a car.

Died 6 May 1940, aged 36

Fatally injured when run over trying to stop a runaway horse and van.

Killed in an enemy air raid while off duty at home with his wife who died later.

Fatally injured 17 September by bomb splinters on duty during an enemy air raid.

Died 20 December 1940, aged 40

Killed by falling masonry when Dock buildings demolished in enemy air raids.

Killed by a high explosive bomb cycling to duty at the Docks in an enemy air raid.

Died 22 December 1940, aged 46

Fatally injured 21 December dealing with incendiary bombs during an air raid.

Died 20 February 1941, aged 47 

Found drowned in the King's Dock having fallen in on night patrol in the blackout.

Killed evacuating the area of an unexploded bomb which detonated in an air raid.

Died 29 March 1941, aged 25

 Trying to rescue a family in a house fire he perished with two children in his arms.

Posthumously awarded the King's Police and Fire Services Medal for Gallantry.

Died 3 May 1941, aged 39

Killed by a bomb explosion patrolling George's Dock during an enemy air raid.

Died 4 May 1941, aged 50

Killed by a bomb explosion patrolling Canada Dock during an enemy air raid.

Died 8 May 1941, aged 42

Killed on duty in an air raid shelter hit by a high explosive bomb during an air raid.

Died 8 May 1941, aged 26

PC Frederick Walter Doran

Died 8 May 1941, aged 44

Killed by bomb explosions while on patrol during enemy air raids.

Died 8 September 1941, aged 44

Died as a result of injuries from bomb explosion during air raid of 7/8 May 1941.

Died 5 February 1943, aged 45

Found drowned in an emergency water tank with a boy he probably tried to rescue.

Died 17 January 1944, aged 37

Killed cycling on duty in the early morning when accidentally run over by a bus.

Died 18 November 1944, aged 50

Collapsed on morning duty at Allerton police station and died of heart failure.

Died 2 August 1945, aged 35

Died of tuberculosis contracted while on duty with the Police War Reserve.

Died 17 July 1946, aged 51

Died of disease attributable to injuries received 1930 in a police motorcycle crash.


PWRC Stanley Antrobus 

Died 11 September 1946, aged 36

Pensioned in July 1945 and died as a result of injuries received 24 August 1942.

Died 3 November 1946, aged 54

Pensioned 1945 and died from effects of blast injury sustained in the 1941 air raids.


PC Arthur Kirkpatrick 

Died 3 December 1946, aged 45

Killed cycling to duty when he skidded on tram lines and was struck by a car.


PWRC Joseph Stephen Hawksey

Died 24 September 1947, aged 37

Died from injuries received in 1942 as a result of enemy action in Liverpool.

Died 7 January 1948, aged 29

Died the day after he was knocked down by a goods vehicle while on night duty.


PC Anthony Joseph Dennison

Died 7 January 1948, aged 29

Died after being struck on the neck in a football match during recruit training.


PC Francis Leo Gallagher

Died 12 November 1961, aged 52

Killed reporting for early duty in a collision of his motorcycle and a milk lorry.

Died 19 February 1962, aged 20

Killed in a fall through a garage roof while searching for a suspected burglar.

Died 10 May 1968, aged 24

Killed in a collision with a lorry on an advanced police motorcycle course in Wales.

Died 27 October 1974, aged 32

Killed in a motorcycle crash returning home from duty at night in stormy weather.


PC Raymond Davenport

Died 4 July 1981, aged 35

Fatally injured when dragged by a stolen car while trying to arrest the driver.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Died 5 October 1981, aged 33

Fatally injured in a road traffic collision travelling to report for duty on 3 October.


PC James William Byers

Died 6 May 1983, aged 35

PC Norman Harold Jones 

Died 6 May 1983, aged 53

Killed together when struck by a carwhile at the scene of a motorway accident.


PC William Marshall

Died 29 June 1986, aged 47

Died as result of injuries received when hit with concrete during 1981 Toxteth riots.

Holder of the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct 1968.

Died 24 June 1987, aged 22

Died on police motorcycle training after he hit a vehicle turning across his path.


Sgt Douglas Charles Beggs

Died 24 November 1987, aged 44

Killed in a vehicle collision leaving the Mersey Tunnel while going off duty.


PC John Shevlin

Died 10 November 1997, aged 36

Died after two years in a coma since his police car crashed on an emergency call.


PC Gary Clarke

Died 7 August 2001, aged 38 

Killed when he was struck bya car at Birkenhead while cycling home from work.


PC David Thomas Shreeve

Died 9 November 2005, aged 38

Killed in a motorway collision with a lorry on a police motorcycle training course.


PC Neil Doyle

Died 19 December 2014, aged 36

Died of injuries after being assaulted when recognised as a police officer off duty.


PC David Andrew Victor Phillips

Died 5 October 2015, aged 34

Deliberately struck and killed by a stolen vehicle after deploying a stopping device.


PC Paul Briggs

Died 21 January 2017, aged 43

Died of injuries received in 2015 in a motorcycle collision while reporting for duty.
