Collapsed in the street and died of heart failure shortly after going on duty.

Died 2 June 1908, aged 68

Collapsed and died of heart failure while escorting a prisoner to prison.


PC John Alexander MacLurg

Died 25 December 1968, aged 38

Collapsed while taking part in a mountain rescue and later died.

Died 22 August 1896, aged 54

Accidentally struck by a passing train while returning to his station at Dalry.

Died 21 May 1933, aged 33

Killed when his motorcycle crashed attending the scene of an accident.

Died 30 October 1965, aged 36

Fatally injured directing traffic past a road accident when hit by a car.

Died 25 November 1877, aged 53

Collapsed and died of exposure while on patrol on a very cold night.

Died 20 December 1888, aged 41

Suffered a stroke and died while on his beat in the early hours.

Died 27 August 1926, aged 45

Fatally injured in a road accident while searching for a suspect.

Died 24 January 1937, aged 53

Found drowned in Rothesay Dock after going missing on duty in bad weather.


PC James Rankin Shepherd

Died 30 June 1943, aged 36

Fatally injured in a road accident while on motorcycle patrol.

Died 23 November 1963, aged 48

Fatally injured when struck by a car while operating a road check.

Shot dead during disturbances while preventing a sectarian march.

Died 4 April 1847

Died of a fractured skull, apparently having been assaulted on night duty.

Died 8 March 1848

Accidentally shot dead by the military during rioting in the city.


PC Duncan Cameron

Died 24 October 1860, aged 26

Drowned when he fell in the River Clyde patrolling the docks at night.


PC John McArthur

Died 2 May 1861, aged 30

Found dead down a stair on his beat by a fall or blow on the head.


PC Robert Campbell

Died 5 November 1863, aged 46

Fatally injured when attacked by a drunken man he was moving on.


PC William Gordon

Died 17 March 1882, aged 45

Fell into the harbour and drowned in the early morning while on night duty.


Insp George Riddell

Died 16 August 1888, aged 44

While moving a prisoner at the station he collapsed and later died.


PC John McDonald

Died 21 February 1890, aged 25

Found drowned in the docks where he had been patrolling his beat.


PC John Carruthers McNaught

Died 28 May 1892, aged 25 

Collapsed and died while arresting a youth who had been quarrelling.

Died 18 December 1893, aged 40

Following observations at night he became ill and died in a few days.

Died 22 November 1894, aged 39

Knocked down by a train and fatally injured while making his rounds.

Died 9 December 1895, aged 23

Fatally injured trying to stop a runaway horse and coal lorry.


PC Robert Cruickshanks

Died 20 August 1896, aged 30

Collapsed and died of heart failure patrolling his beat early in the morning.


PC Andrew Urquhart

Died 24 October 1897, aged 32

Collapsed and died when hit with a poker at a domestic disturbance.


Insp William Wilson C. Cumming

Died 15 September 1903, aged 57

Fatally injured in a road accident while walking home from his office.


PC Robert Caughey

Died 31 December 1905, aged 29

Drowned when he accidentally fell in the river, patrolling the docks.


PC Hugh Savage

Died 18 December 1910, aged 23

Collapsed and died of heart failure when chasing boys for obstruction.


PC Robert Smith

Died 16 July 1912, aged 55

Died from disease as the result of an injury received while on duty.


PC George Miller

Died 6 July 1916, aged 35

Whilst on duty as Court Officer he collapsed and died of heart failure.

Died 20 January 1919, aged 39

Shot twice and fatally wounded while attempting to arrest a burglar.


PC William McGregor

Died 1 June 1919, aged 25

Died of injuries received 6 months earlier when hit by a bottle in a riot.

Died 2 May 1920, aged 49

Fatally injured when he was struck by a skidding car whilst on his beat.


Insp Robert Johnston

Died 4 May 1921, aged 41

Shot dead escorting a Sinn Fein prisoner, during a rescue attempt.


PC John Burr

Died 6 December 1929, aged 25

Fatally injured in a road accident on his beat during a stormy night.


PC Harry Ellis Wilkinson

Died 5 August 1937, aged 42

Killed in a road accident when hit by a car while reporting for duty.


PC Hugh Welsh

Died 5 January 1938, aged 36

Died of disease from an injury sustained investigating a burglary.

Collapsed and died from heart failure while on night patrol duty.

Shot dead when, although retired, he tried to arrest an armed suspect.


PC Stewart Cameron MacDonald

Died 22 November 1948, aged 21

Killed while searching for suspects on a foggy night when hit by a train.


PC John Macleod

Died 4 September 1952, aged 31

Approaching a suspect he was shot without warning and fatally wounded.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Died 12 September 1957, aged 54

Died from heart failure during the night in the Kirklee Police Signal Box.

Died 27 March 1958, aged 35

Killed when his police vehicle was involved in a road accident.


PC Patrick Moulds

Died 9 August 1958, aged 52

Fatally injured when hit by a bus while on football traffic control.


PC Robert Gillies

Died 28 September 1958, aged 22

Killed on night cycle patrol when hit by a drunk driver who failed to stop.


D/Supt Charles Main McNeill

Died 15 June 1962, aged 54

Fatally injured in a road accident   while returning from a conference.


SC George Brownlie Gates

Died 23 September 1969, aged 50

Beaten to death when intervening in a crime while he was off duty.


A/DC Angus MacLeod MacKenzie

Died 30 December 1969, aged 31

Shot dead trying to arrest a suspect who had just shot another officer.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.


PC Edward Alexander Barnett

Died 4 January 1970, aged 24 

Fatally wounded attempting to arrest an armed man with A/DC MacKenzie.

Posthumously awarded the Queen's Police Medal for Gallantry.


PC Robert Belford

Died 15 March 1970, aged 34

Fatally injured in a road accident while on traffic patrol duty.


PC John Stewart Duff Robertson

Died 15 November 1970, aged 38

Fatally injured when his police vehicle skidded on ice and crashed.


Sgt James Cuthell Fairbrother

Died 26 June 1971, aged 54

Collapsed and died on night duty in Garscadden Police Station.


PC David Robert Peterson

Died 9 September 1972, aged 36

Died when overcome by smoke warning building tenants of a fire.


PC James Hay

Died 20 April 1973, aged 42

Collapsed and died of heart failure on duty in Maryhill police station.


PC Colin MacDuff

Died 27 June 1973, aged 28

Drowned attempting to rescue a drowning man in the River Clyde.

Died 20 December 1986, aged 56

Died of injuries sustained in 1959 guarding a dangerous building.

PC John Mitchell

Died 23 February 1890, aged 30 

While turning out the Fire Brigade to a fire he collapsed and died.

Died 30 August 1896, aged 45

Died from a head injury received when he was assaulted while on night duty.

Drowned while on night duty when he fell into Greenock Docks.

Died 7 April 1886, aged 61

Found dead in a police box in the early hours apparently having had a stroke.

Died 5 December 1960, aged 20

Killed in a road accident travelling to a course at the Police College.

Collapsed and died from a stroke while on duty in the Burgh Police Office.

Died 16 May 1963, aged 45

Collapsed and died while on duty as road safety officer in police HQ.

Died 19 June 1876, aged 23

Killed by the accidental explosion of dynamite at railway works at Hamilton.

Died 4 September 1893, aged 50

Fatally stabbed arresting a man suspected of a street robbery.


PC Joseph Simpson

Died 10 May 1897, aged 25

Accidentally killed when he was struck by a train while walking on the railway.


PC Peter Munro

Died 7 August 1921, aged 21

Fatally injured in an arrest during disturbances after a football match.


PC Robert Bryce Rennie

Died 6 July 1925, aged 49

Accidentally asphyxiated by his collar after fainting in the police station.


PC Sydney Hussey Craik

Died 12 September 1932, aged 31

Fatally injured when knocked down while chasing a street bookmaker.

Died 27 April 1941, aged 46

Collapsed and died of heart failure on duty in the Rutherglen Police Office.

Died 6 March 1945, aged 42

Killed as a result of enemy action while off duty during an air raid.

Died 29 September 1966, aged 29

Taken ill on duty and died in hospital soon after from a brain haemorrhage.

Died 26 September 1969, aged 42

Killed at a road accident scene at night when hit by a passing car.

Died 1 January 1972 aged 46

Became unwell on duty and soon after he collapsed and died of heart failure.

Collapsed and died at a reception for the opening of a new station.

Fatally wounded when attacked with an axe by two escaped murderers.

Killed in a road accident returning home after a protracted enquiry.

Killed when his police car was hit head on by a car on the motorway.

Collapsed on duty and died in hospital of heart failure.

Fatally stabbed attempting to arrest a deranged knifeman in the street.

Killed in a road traffic accident while travelling home from late shift duty.

Died 20 October 2006, aged 46

Killed in a car crash while responding to an emergency call in Ayrshire.

Died 21 June 2007, aged 47

Fatally injured in an accidental fall while attending a training exercise in France.

Died 21 January 2009, aged 40

Killed when her car crashed travelling to report for early duty at Glasgow.

Died 8 October 2010, aged 55

Died in a collision with a car cycling during a lunch break at the training centre.

Died 2 November 2011, aged 49

Died from head injuries received in a police vehicle accident in 2002.
