Matt Ratana

Died 25 September 2020, aged 54

Sergeant Ratana was night Custody Officer at the Croydon Custody Centre when a man arrested for unlawful possession of drugs and ammunition was brought in by police officers. As they prepared to search him using a metal detector, the prisoner, who was seated and handcuffed behind his back, fired several gunshots fatally wounding Sergeant Ratana and injuring himself.

Matt was originally from Hawke's Bay in New Zealand, after university he came to London in 1989 where he played professional rugby before joining the Metropolitan Police in 1991. He worked as a Constable in the West End and Westminster and on the Territorial Support Group. He returned to serve with the New Zealand Police between 2003 and 2008 before re-joining the Met and from 2010 worked as a Response and Neighbourhood Sergeant in Hackney and Croydon before becoming a Custody Officer two years ago.

He is survived by his partner and an adult son from a previous relationship. 


Resham Singh Nahal

Died 26 June 2020, aged 53

Following serious injuries received in November 2019, when he was struck by a passing car whilst dealing with a road traffic collision at Oldbury, he was recovering at home when he suffered cardiac arrest and died.

Resham, who worked for the West Midlands Ambulance Service, had volunteered as a Special Constable for 15 years, working as part of the Force Support Unit.

He is survived by his parents and his son,


Matthew Lannie

Died 21 April 2020, aged 40

South Yorkshire Police badge

Died following a collision between his marked police motorcycle and a car, while responding to reports of a vehicle failing to stop for officers near Sheffield.

Matt was a specialist motorcycle officer in the roads policing unit, prior to which he served as a response officer at Sheffield. He had former service with the Armed Forces including the Royal Military Police.

He is survived by his parents, sister and partner.


Nick Dumphreys

Nicholas Charles (Nick) Dumphreys

Died 26 January 2020, aged 47

Cumbria Constabulary badge

Killed while responding to an emergency call when the police vehicle he was driving left the carriageway and crashed on the M6 motorway near Carlisle.

Nick joined Cumbria Constabulary in 2003, working in Penrith and Brampton and with the Constabulary's Mobile Support Group out of Carlisle Divisional HQ at Durranhill. In 2017 he was part of a team of officers commended by the Chief Constable for their actions during and after a fire at a residential home forelderly and vulnerable people.

He is survived by his wife, a serving police officer, and two young children.

Died 15 September 2020, aged 35

Metropolitan Police

Died whilst travelling to report for duty in the early morning when his motorcycle was involved in a collision at Redbridge.

Chris joined the Metropolitan Police in 2015 and had been working with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command since November 2019.

He is survived by his partner and two young daughters.


Paul Keany

 Northamptonshire Police

Died 11 March 2020, aged 43

Northamptonshire Police badge

Shortly after commencing evening duty at Kettering Custody Suite he collapsed and died of heart failure.

Paul joined Hertfordshire Constabulary in January 2007 before transferring to Northamptonshire in March 2010; working in both uniform and CID roles, including temporary sergeant duties, before promotion to Sergeant in January 2020.
